I'll have to have surgery.  My knee has a piece of cartilege floating around in it that they want to remove.  I see the specialist next Tuesday.

Yay!

I've been moved to the engineering group from the analyst group.  I have my own desk with my back to a door (crappiest desk in the place - no second crappiest to the guy who has a desk in between two cubicles setup in a hallway) my own PC (without Administrative rights or the ability to load Linux on it) and tomorrow I finally get my badge.

The boss keeps giving me what he sees at weeks worth of work, and I'm tending to be done in hours.  I think its irritating him.  Its not the sort of open ended type of work either, its 'get x from y and do z to it and send the results to me in email' which has been thus far right.  I've been documenting a few processes and learning a few tools that again were supposed to take me weeks to learn and master.  I don't have the heart to tell him that everyone else in the world knows about nmap, nessus and other security tools.

I've become the go-to linux / shell scripting guy.  I've written a couple perl scripts, and am probably going to be maintaining a monster application.  May be on shift work here soon, Th-Sat 6am - 6pm and every other Wednesday (yeah, you get screwed out of 4 hours every two weeks).

Keeping on keeping on.

Just found out what my expected area of expertise is going to be.  Working on a few projects.  One of the guys I looked forward to working with is leaving.

On my third day on the job, I re-injured my left knee.  I'm what'd be considered vaguely double jointed - I can disjoint enough to get into positions that'd be uncomfortable for most people, but not enough to get out of cuffs or a straight jacket.  One area of particular note is my knees.

When I was in 6th grade, I was taking the dog food out to the two dogs in the back yard, slipped on some snow and dislocated my knee.  We went to the doctor, he said eventually it'd come out permantly, and I'd have to get surgery.  In the mean time, avoid skiing.  Its popped out a handful of times, but for the last couple years its been good.  This time, it didn't wanna go back in.  Worse, I did it on the job, right when one of the VIP's was coming in to meet me.

Awesome.

Talked to the doctor last Friday.  Got my appointment setup for PT next Friday (the sixth) and have to get MRI's done.  Its been on and off, but Memorial day, I couldn't walk on it at all until 4:00pm (which made going to the bathroom interesting).

I'm tired.  Haven't had time to play on the computer really since the new job is 9 hours per day (doesn't matter if I take an hour for lunch or eat at my desk, I'm charged an hour for it) and driving about 2 hours per day minimum.  I've been having to drive the V8 because its an automatic -- the manual was causing stress to my left knee.

Got the new Think Geek catalog in the mail today.  Was flipping through it thinking how much of the stuff would be perfect gifts for somewoman.

Seriously, who else could you see wearing this:

Or having this in their bathroom:

Then again, there's the red warrior T:

I'm checking in to let everyone know, like the damned computer in Portal, I'm still alive.

Its kinda bittersweet.  I'll miss all my co-workers, this wasn't my choice of timing, but the future looks good for me.  I'm excited to get my life going in a more positive direction.  Deleted all my personal files from my workstation, removed all my files into a folder.  We have a plan for lunch with the whole office then I'm gomnna head home.  Its been a fun four years here.

Its been a week.  I've been waiting for a letter every day.  Turns out they do a quickie background check on you first.  Takes 3 - 5 business days.  They're going to call within the hour to let me know how that went.

Update sub-two: They're going to offer me the job.  10% more pay than I asked for to boot.  I start next Monday.

Insane that he could keep it hidden as well as he did. How could you possibly do this. Of course part of me wants to know if the daughter was hot. Window seat please!

Blog EntryMy first Perl programApr 24, '08 10:44 AM
for everyone
Requirements for $new_job are I need to learn Perl fast.  Got Sams Teach Yourself Perl in 24 hours.  Instead of just doing the examples, I'm trying to extend my knowledge as fast as possible.

#!/usr/bin/perl -w

print "How many dice would you like to roll? ";
chomp($num_dice=<STDIN>);
print "\nHow many sides per die? ";
chomp($sides=<STDIN>);
print "\nRolling ${num_dice}d${sides}: ";
while ($num_dice > 0) {
        print int(rand($sides))+1 . " ";
        $num_dice--;
}

I wish the print statement at the end was cleaner, but for a first go, I'm happy with it.

Jeltz and I caught up again, he's on his way home was running out of hours, so he crashed at the new Hagerstown Pilot and gave me back my cooler.  We talked a bit, he showed me the damage to his passenger side mirror.  I decided I needed a way to pay the mortgage if this job thing doesn't work out, so I tazer'd his fat butt, stuffed him back into his truck, disabled the GPS in the truck, unhooked the trailer and moved the truck to an undisclosed location.

If you ever want to see Vogon again paypal me $100.

Hey there matey. I know we don't agree on everything ..... But what we DO agree on I really like your ideas. Oh hell, I even like reading your ideas on the stuff we DONT agree on. lol.

I was wondering if I could add you to my contact list? I would be happy for you to come and pull my blogs to bits when we don't agree. And we could do the back slapping bit for the parts we DO agree on ... lol.

Anyway ...have a think about it and let me know hey?
